Program information

St. Edmund Elementary offers a Francais Plus program.

The Français Plus Program

With the Français Plus program, children are immersed in French in the early years. Gradually, more English is introduced into the program.

IN KINDERGARTEN, 92% OF THE INSTRUCTION IS IN THE FRENCH LANGUAGE.

IN CYCLE 1 (GRADES 1 AND 2), 82% OF THE INSTRUCTION IS IN THE FRENCH LANGUAGE.
French Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Art are taught in French. English Language Arts, Physical Education, Music and Ethics and Religious Culture are taught in English. This represents 18% of time.

IN CYCLE 3 (GRADES 5 AND 6), FRENCH INSTRUCTION REPRESENTS 47% AND ENGLISH INSTRUCTION REPRESENTS 53%.
French Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Art are taught in French. English Language Arts, Mathematics, Physical Education, Music, and Ethics and Religious Culture are taught in English.

Physical Education

The main goal of the Physical Education program is to encourage students to develop and improve their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being through physical activities. It should not, however, be the sole physical activity for any student.

Students in Kindergarten receive 60 minutes of physical education every week.

All other students receive 120 minutes of physical education every week. The study of nutrition will also be incorporated into the program.

If for some reason your child cannot participate, a note stating the reason is necessary. If your child must be exempt for several consecutive classes, a note from your child’s physician is required.

Students are required to wear shorts or jogging pants, T-shirt and socks in the dress code colors and running shoes for gym.

It is important to wear running shoes that are reserved for indoor use as running shoes worn outside accumulate dirt, become worn and do not provide the required traction and support.

Pants with buckles, zippers, etc pose a safety hazard in the gym, and are, thus, inappropriate gym wear.

Students with long hair are requested to tie it back for gym. Jewelry is not to be worn on gym days.

Please note the gym day(s) of your child and ensure that the appropriate clothing is worn on those days.

Music Program

We have a very active music program here at St. Edmund! Students in all grades enjoy coming to the music room to explore many genres of music, instruments, rhythms, dance, singing, composition and much more! During the year, all students have the opportunity to participate in a musical theatre production where they can showcase their hard work for parents. Below are some of the concepts and activities we explore at each level:

Kindergarten and Cycle 1: Movement and dance, Carnival of the Animals classical music exploration, percussion instruments, basic musical notation rhythm reading, rhythm composition and performance, singing, boomwhackers and xylophones.

Cycle 2: Dance, reading musical notation (rhythm and pitch), recorder, percussion instruments, African drumming, music history, instrument families, singing, music composition and performance, “rock band” (where we interpret pop songs the students are interested using instruments like the drum kit).

Cycle 3: Dance, reading more advanced rhythmic and pitch notation, ukulele, recorder, percussion instruments, African drumming, music history, instrument families, singing and beat-boxing, music composition and performance, “rock band” (where we interpret pop songs with many different instruments including drum kit).

We also have a band program offered for senior students where they have the opportunity to learn the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone and drum kit.
