We have a very active music program here at St. Edmund! Students in all grades enjoy coming to the music room to explore many genres of music, instruments, rhythms, dance, singing, composition and much more! During the year, all students have the opportunity to participate in a musical theatre production where they can showcase their hard work for parents. Below are some of the concepts and activities we explore at each level:
Kindergarten and Cycle 1: Movement and dance, Carnival of the Animals classical music exploration, percussion instruments, basic musical notation rhythm reading, rhythm composition and performance, singing, boomwhackers and xylophones.
Cycle 2: Dance, reading musical notation (rhythm and pitch), recorder, percussion instruments, African drumming, music history, instrument families, singing, music composition and performance, "rock band" (where we interpret pop songs the students are interested using instruments like the drum kit).
Cycle 3: Dance, reading more advanced rhythmic and pitch notation, ukulele, recorder, percussion instruments, African drumming, music history, instrument families, singing and beat-boxing, music composition and performance, "rock band" (where we interpret pop songs with many different instruments including drum kit).
